Rooney out of Valencia game with ankle injury

Wayne Rooney will miss Manchester United’s Champions League match against Valencia on Wednesday due to the ankle injury he picked up during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Bolton Wanderers.

Speaking to BBC after the game, United's assistant manager Mike Phelan hoped that Rooney would be available for the midweek trip to Spain, however, Sir Alex Ferguson told club officials today that 24-year-old wouldn’t travel.

No further details on the extent of Rooney’s injury were released and he could now be in doubt for England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on October 12.

However, the injury could be a blessing in disguise for both club and player as Rooney’s form appears to have been affected by revelations about his private life in a number of tabloids over the last couple of weeks.
