Rooney: I hope Ronaldo doesn't make it to the World Cup

Wayne Rooney hopes that his former Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal side fail to qualify for the World Cup. The England striker was famously sent off when the two countries met in 2006 much to Ronaldo's delight at the time.

Portugal also knocked England out of Euro 2004 so there is not much love lost between the two teams: "It would be nice to see Portugal not there because [at our] last two tournaments they've knocked us out," Rooney said.

Ronaldo & Co. are currently lying in third place in their World Cup qualifying group with Denmark and Sweden ahead of Portugal who take on Hungary at home on Saturday night. Rooney was famously sent off in England's quarter-final defeat to Portugal for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho prompting Ronaldo to wink at the England forward.

Rooney also spoke about how he has been lucky to escape stick from England fans in comparison to some of his international team-mates: "I was happy I didn't get the stick Becks got [in the 1998 sending off against Argentina] and even Phil Neville did at Euro 2000.I didn't really get any stick. Ronaldo took a lot of it and I'm pleased with that."
