Rooney a doubt for Milan game

Manchester United and Arsenal could be forced to play their midweek Champions League second-leg matches without the talismanic figures of Wayne Rooney and Cesc Fábregas respectively.

Rooney aggravated a knee problem during England’s 3-1 win over Egypt on Wednesday and now looks set to miss the game against AC Milan at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson is reported to have been furious after Rooney declared himself fit for international duty and subsequently picked up a knock. ‘Wayne is very doubtful,’ Ferguson said. ‘The Wembley pitch has killed him.’

Elsewhere Fabregas suffered a hamstring strain in Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Burnley on Saturday and could be forced to sit out the Gunners’ crucial game with Porto as the Premier League side look to overturn a 2-1 deficit.
