Romario to enter Brazilian politics

Former Brazil legend Romario is set to enter the world of politics amidst allegations of fraud. The 43-year-old, who was part of the 1994 World Cup winning squad netting an astonishing 70 goals in 80 games for the Canarinho, will run for the Socialist Party in the 2010 federal elections.

"Romario will have policies and can't just depend on the votes of his supporters," the party's chairman in Rio, Alexandre Cardos, told O Globo. The former PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona striker is currently embroiled in an illegal betting investigation and was forced to sell a luxury apartment last year.

The profits from the sale were seized by the Brazilian Inland Revenue and used to pay off the former star's mounting debts. Romario, who claims to have scored 1000 goals in his senior career, finally hung up his boots in February 2008 at the age of 42.
