Richard Keys resigns from Sky Sports

Richard Keys has resigned from Sky Sports after the sexism row that has engulfed the TV and football world revealed him to be an Alan Partridge-style throwback.

His resignation is very likely linked to the fact that he went on Talksport and made a bit of a fool of himself, trying to apologise but ending up at every turn sounding like someone who’d found a whole and wanted to find out just how deep it would go. Anyone who hasn’t listened to it should make their way to the Talksport website and have a little listen. However not everything he said was completely embarrassing, as it was clear he was trying to apologise, in his own roundabout way.

‘Our prehistoric banter is not acceptable in a modern world,’ he said. ‘We were wrong. It was wrong. It shouldn't have happened. I hope this starts the process of recovery and that everybody now can just step back and understand that you know these boorish and bullish guys understand the magnitude of what happened.

However Karen Brady was having none of it. Although some might balk at the idea of taking lessons on sexism from someone who takes coin from two of the biggest porn barons in the country, she does pour a delicious amount of scorn on Key’s suggestion that she was refusing to answer his calls.

‘Perhaps Richard thought I was too busy making the tea and washing up to take his call but a cursory glance at the weekend's newspapers or television would have made him well aware that I was heavily occupied with the West Ham and Newham Council Olympic Stadium bid.

‘West Ham's future in the Olympic Stadium is of far more significance to me than his future. It is most unfortunate that he has chosen to add insult to injury today by suggesting that this incident has done me a favour by getting West Ham out of the press, as after all I did not ask to be part of his sexist tirade.

‘This is not about an apology to me, but about an apology to all women. Richard represents views that myself and those who work in the business of football find totally dinosaur.’
