Real Madrid's surprise

Real Madrid have expressed surprise at Uefa’s decision to investigate them for allegedly telling their players to get themselves deliberately sent off.

The European giants are being investigated for improper conduct by Uefa, after Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos incurred strange second yellow cards during their 4-0 win over Ajax this week. The pair will now miss their dead rubber final game rather than carry over their yellow cards into the knock-out stage. Both were sent off for deliberate time-wasting.

‘Real Madrid expresses its surprise for [the] decision,’ said the club in a statement. ‘(Real Madrid) understands it does not follow the content of Uefa's Disciplinary Regulations.’

‘My being sent off against Ajax is of no concern,’ said Ramos. ‘It is a thing of the past. It's time to move on and to think about the [game against Barcelona this weekend]. I am not worried about any repercussions because I don't think I broke any rules.’
