Real Madrid and Barcelona play out Super Cup thriller

Is this year the year that the Barcelona dynasty finally comes under serious threat? Yesterday they and arch-rivals Real Madrid did battle in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup at the Bernabeu, and they produced a absolute corker of a game, one that went in stark contrast to the bad-tempered bilge that passed for football in last season's Champions League semi-final.

The match finished 2-2, but what was most notable in the aftermath was the way in which Real Madrid imposed themselves on Barca, keeping the ball and keeping Barca's best players extremely quiet. Mesut Ozil scored the first goal in the 12th minute, slotting home after a powerful run from the impressive Karim Benzema, however Barca were always dangerous on the counter attack and David Villa snatched a goal well against the run of play in the 35th minute. Up to that point they hadn't created a single chance.

Despite their dominance, Lionel Messi gave his side the lead just after half time, pouncing on a mistake from Sami Khedira. However Xabi Alonso soon levelled the scores, curling home from the edge of the area with 53 minutes on the clock; amazingly there were no more goals after this, despite Madrid continuing with their impressive attacking. The second leg is on Wednesday, and we expect the roles to be reversed.
