Real cool interest in Alonso after £35m valuation

Real Madrid appear to have cooled their interest in Xabi Alonso after Liverpool slapped a £35m price tag on the midfielder. The La Liga club's director general, Jorge Valdano, has said that Real will look elsewhere if the Reds refuse to lower their valuation.

Alonso looked set to leave Anfield last summer for a fee of just £18m and the Spanish midfielder is said to anxious to sort out his future sooner rather than later ahead of the start of next season. While Madrid have been in contact with Liverpool regarding a possible transfer, the Premier League club has yet to reveal a concrete offer for the 27-year-old.

Valdano spoke about the impasse earlier today: "Xabi Alonso is a priority if he fits into our budget, and this doesn't seem the case. We are very far from the figures that Liverpool have set out. Liverpool have taken up a difficult stance over Xabi Alonso."

"I don't like to talk about the private details of negotiations. We are studying many alternatives. We want someone who can channel the play and there aren't many like that in the world," Valdano continued.

Real's director general also told reporters that the club would not be making a bid for Valencia striker David Villa following the signing of Karim Benzema from Lyon earlier this week.
