Reading win promotion to Premier League

Premier League football will return to the Madejski Stadium next season, after Reading secured automatic promotion with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest. Jubilant fans celebrated and gave the credit for the success to the manager, brandishing a banner proclaiming "Brian McDermott: Messiah".

"More like the life of Brian," McDermott said. "I hope there's some late-night pubs open in Reading tonight. I've been carried along by my players and staff this season. We've had some difficult times, but I'm happy. We've done a good job this year. The fans are going to have a good summer and that's what it's all about. I had a miserable summer last year."

Reading were beaten in the play-off final last year, and lost of lot of their top players last summer. McDermott has performed an impressive job in reshaping a team capable of challenging for promotion.

A remarkable late run has brought 46 points from a possible 51, as Reading outstripped promotion favourites West Ham. McDermott was a candidate to take the Wolves job mid-season, but stayed at Reading, who have been promoted, while Wolves look certain to be relegated.

"Of course this is my best moment in football," he said. "My worst was on that pitch at Wembley on 30 May last year. I didn’t see any good coming out of that, but the dedication and hard work of my staff to get here has really been something. We're in the Premier League now. We've been promoted and I can celebrate for the next two months.”
