Reading score phantom goal against Watford

When is a goal not a goal? When the whole ball doesn't cross the line of course. Well that's unless you were playing for Reading against Watford last Saturday.

After a corner, a few misdirected shots and headers in the Watford box, in which the ball didn't even come within a yard of threatening the goal, one of the linesmen decided to tell the ref to award Reading a goal!

While there have been some controversial phantom goals over the years, e.g. Mourinho still harps on about Luis Garcia's 'goal' for Liverpool in the Champions League semi-finals, but this one will take some beating. Reading boss Steve Coppell has offered to replay the game, but the Football League has said that the decision stands and that's that.
