Portugal progress to Euro 2008 quarter-finals
Portugal booked their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008 thanks to a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic in Group A yesterday. Man of the moment Cristiano Ronaldo scored Portugal's second goal in the 63rd minute after the Czechs had equalized through Sionko.
Deco had put Portugal ahead after 8 minutes tapping home a deflected Ronaldo effort while Quaresma put the gloss on the result finishing off an impressive counter-attack launched by the Manchester United winger. The Czech Republic need a result against Turkey on Sunday to progress to the quarter-finals.
Co-hosts Switzerland became the first team to be dumped out of Euro 2008 after Arda scored an injury time winner for Turkey. Torrential rain in the first half turned the game into a dog-fight with the Swiss dealing better with the conditions. They took the lead through Hakan Yakin on 32 minutes.
But Turkey rallied in the second half and got back on level terms through substitute Semih. With Switzerland pushing for a winner Turkey Arda counter-attacked on the left before cutting infield and launching a deflected shot past Benaglio breaking Swiss hearts in the process.
