Portsmouth beat Cardiff to win the FA Cup

Portsmouth beat Cardiff 1-0 at Wembley to win the FA Cup on Saturday thanks to a Kanu goal in the first half. The victory will also earned the south coast side a spot in next season's Uefa Cup.

It was an FA Cup final without any of the usual suspects, i.e. Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool, but there was no lack of the drama or sense of occasion due to the absence of the big four.

Nwankwo Kanu was the hero for Portsmouth on the day after he capitalised on Peter Enckelman's mistake in the 22nd minute. The Cardiff keeper failed to gather a cross from the right setting up an easy chance for the Nigerian striker.

Cardiff had the ball in the net at the end of the first half but Loovens' goal was ruled out for handball. The Championship side struggled to come to terms with Portsmouth's five man midfield with Pedro Mendes and the outstanding Lassana Diarra controlling the centre of the park.

Diarra has made no secret of his desire to move to a bigger club should the opportunity arise. The Frenchman is already coveted by a number of clubs in England and Italy and with his star set to rise during the European Championship in Austria, it looks as if Diarra has played his last game for Portsmouth.
