Porto win Europa League

This year’s Europa League has flown by without hardly anyone paying any attention, so it might surprise you to find out that Porto are this year’s winners, after beating fellow Portuguese outfit Braga 1-0 in Dublin last night.

Falcao scored the winner, heading home a Freddy Guarin cross, but the whole affair appeared muted, probably because Porto finished their league season unbeaten and a full 38 points ahead of Braga. They now only need to beat Guimaraes in the Portuguese Cup final to complete a Treble.

For Uefa however the challenge remains how to encourage interest in a competition which appears to be less relevant with each passing season, as the remains of the once-great Uefa Cup get trampled all over.

‘Without a doubt this is a great feat,’ said Porto coach Andre Villas Boas. ‘We have one trophy left for a memorable season. This has a huge emotional impact for us. Round after round, we kept believing more. Porto becomes an even more special club, even more unique. It adds another trophy, which is important and builds its future.’
