Pietersen ruled out of Ashes with Achilles injury
England's hopes of Ashes victory suffered a hammer blow this afternoon with the news that Kevin Pietersen has been ruled of the rest of the series after undergoing an operation on his Achilles tendon.
The former England captain spoke about his disappointment earlier today: "As an England cricketer the Ashes are the pinnacle of the game so I'm absolutely devastated. Up until now the injury has been manageable but it recently reached the point where we needed to look at other options in terms of treatment."
The batsman continued: "I hate missing matches for England and especially during an Ashes summer but I'm confident I can return to the England team injury-free following a course of rehabilitation."
Pietersen took part in England's 115-run win over Australia at Lord's but was battling with injury throughout and had difficulty running. The injury to Pietersen opens the door to Ian Bell who will join up with the England squad for next week's third Ashes Test at Edgbaston.
