Worst Premier League managers ever

The Premier League is a division in which even the best managers are sacked eventually (Jose Mourinho for example) but the ones we’ve looked at here probably shouldn’t have stepped foot in any Premier League ground.

Let’s start with a great player who made a bad manager. Tony Adams really wasn’t given much of a chance when he took over at Portsmouth Football Club. His predecessor Harry Redknapp had been very popular and very successful at the south coast club. He’d also been very bad with the club’s money so Adams took charge at a club that had debts and very little future. He was bad though.

Nigel Worthington won 7 matches during his time in charge of Norwich but 19 loses put the club 1 point from safety on the final day of the season. A colossally bad match against Fulham pushed Worthington and Norwich into the Championship.

Pepe Mel looks happy in this picture but his Premier League career shouldn’t have given him cause to smile. He won 3 times as boss of West Brom before leaving by mutual consent.

Paul Ince was another great player who made a bad manager. At Blackburn he won just 3 out of 17 Premier League matches he was in charge of.

Iain Dowie always sounded like a defeated man when he was interviewed, even if he’d pulled off a draw or after one of his 10 wins in charge of Crystal Palace and Charlton in the Premier League. Granted, this guy was more successful than most of the managers featured here but he was still not good enough for the league.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was another great player who made a poor manager. With 3 wins and 12 loses out of 18 matches in charge of Cardiff, he found himself relegated to the Championship.
