Worst football players that played for England

Playing for your country remains the highest honour a sportsman can achieve, even in football where international matches are often nowhere near as important as crucial Premier League and Champions League matches but sometimes England comes calling when there aren’t many great players, which surely accounts for the caps handed out to Stuart Ripley. He played twice for his country, each appearance was four years apart.

Steve Guppy is next on our list of the lucky ones who made it to the national squad. He only got one cap in 1999 but that’s probably more than he deserved.

John Fashanu wasn’t a bad footballer but he wasn’t a great one either. He got a couple of caps in 1989 when more fancied Liverpool and Man United players were busy with their domestic competitions.

Francis Jeffers was signed by Arsenal to be what Wenger called their “fox in the box”. He was more like a “chicken in a basket” because his performances for the Gunners were lukewarm. His one appearance for England was just as rubbish.

David Nugent was given a chance. He scored a goal but was never called up again. But England were playing Andorra and the ball he kicked into the goal was going in anyway thanks to a thump by Jermaine Defoe.

Seth Johnson was great in the under 21s but he was rubbish in the senior squad. Little wonder that he only got one call up for England.

Our final England player, Michael Ricketts, made history as he was the first Bolton to be called up in 40 years. How embarrassing it must have been for Bolton fans when he failed so miserably in an England shirt. We think the words in this image say it all. “Come on England” what were you thinking?
