Football really isn’t supposed to get this ugly but the players featured here have all had their fair share of scrapes and bruises to show for their time in the game. When Alan Smith broke his left leg in a match against Liverpool in 2006 Sir Alex Ferguson said it was the worst he’d ever seen. It put Smith out of action for seven months.

Alf Inge Haaland was one of the many players to feel Roy Keane’s knee during the Irishman’s controversial career. A five-game suspension and a £150,000 fine were handed out by the FA following the clash at the Manchester derby in 2001.

Djibril Cisse’s horrific injury happened at Ewood Park while playing for Liverpool. He fractured both the tibia and fibula of his left leg after a horrendous tackle. This one put the player out of action for seven months.

He only played three times for Aston Villa in the Premier League, ending his time with the club after a double fracture of his right leg following an incident with Ipswich keeper Richard Wright.
