Patrick Vieira linked with a shock return to Arsenal

Former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira could be set for a shock return to the Gunners with a number of papers reporting that Arsene Wenger is considering making a move for the France international.

The 33-year-old is currently has been on the books at Inter Milan since but has struggled to hold down a first team place making just 50 appearances in three years due to injury. Vieira is available on a free transfer and is said to be anxious to play a full season ahead of next summer's World Cup in South Africa.

Spurs were also linked to the rangy midfielder but Arsenal now appear favourites to resign Vieira on a pay-as-you-play deal. Former Gunner Ian Wright spoke about the possibility of the move yesterday on Talksport: "I'm hearing Vieira, pay-as-you-play, back at Arsenal," Wright said. "That's what I'm hearing, and that's what I'm hoping."

Arsenal have remained trophyless ever since Vieira scored the winning penalty in the FA Cup final against Manchester United back in 2005.
