Owen to United?

While Real Madrid might be splashing all sorts of cash on world stars, things have taken a decidedly credit crunchy turn for Manchester United. Shorn of both Cristiano Ronaldo and the Manchester City-bound Carlos Tevez, Alex Ferguson has taken the unconventional route of signing up a permanent crock.

Yes, Michael 'Icon' Owen, who has spent most of the last year on the Newcastle United treatment table, or comically falling over while trying to convert one-on-ones, is having a medical at Old Trafford, according to the Guardian. Apparently United are looking to take him on as a free agent in the hope he recovers the form that once made him one of the most dangerous strikers in the world.

Having failed to get Karim Benzema or David Villa (or even try in Bensema's case), United haven't exactly splashed the cash, and signing Owen on a free could also suggest that tranfer funds are being used to service the debt accrued since The Glazier's took the club over. Interesting times at Old Trafford.
