Owen: Newcastle have no chance against Liverpool

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has written off Newcastle's chances of picking up points at Anfield on Sunday in their attempt to avoid the drop. Owen has failed to score for the Magpies since returning from injury and the club's fans have called on Newcastle manager Alan Shearer to drop the former England star to the bench.

"We go to Liverpool next and we finish the season at Aston Villa and, if we can get some points from those games, then of course we'll grasp them," Owen told reporters. "But, being realistic, it's the home games [against Middlesbrough and Fulham] that are our major focus now."

Owen's statement is not exactly a ringing endorsement of his teammates and current manager Alan Shearer. The former Newcastle legend has only picked up two points since taking over at St James' Park four games ago. The Magpies are currently lying in the relegation zone, three points behind fourth from bottom side Hull.

Shearer, however, still believes that Newcastle can get a result at Anfield at the weekend: "Everybody will write us off at Liverpool," Shearer said. "I understand that. But I saw Liverpool win at Hull last Saturday and they didn't play particularly well. Going for the title, they are under pressure too. You never know in football."
