Owen left out of England squad for Dutch friendly

Michael Owen has been left out of the England squad to take on Holland in Amsterdam on Wednesday despite reports that he was set to earn an international recall following his preseason form for Manchester United.

Owen has not played for England since the friendly loss to France almost 18 months ago and has failed to hold down a regular place in Fabio Capello's squad. However, having moved to Old Trafford from Newcastle in the summer many expected the former Liverpool striker to feature on Wednesday.

Capello was in Old Trafford last week to watch United take on Valencia but unfortunately the Premier League champions lost 2-0. The four strikers called up by the Italian are Wayne Rooney, Emile Heskey, Jermain Defoe and Carlton Cole with Peter Crouch also missing out.

However, with the World Cup in South Africa less than a year away Owen knows that if he can keep fit and start scoring goals again he has a chance of stepping out of the international wilderness.
