Owen earns United bragging rights over City

Manchester United beat their close neighbours and rivals City 4-3 yesterday thanks to a Micheal Owen goal in the sixth minute of injury time. The former Liverpool striker came, on as a substitute, collected a Ryan Giggs pass before slotting past Shay Given to secure victory in a barnstorming Manchester derby.

Despite dominating for large spells of the match United looked set to share the points with a dogged City side who came from behind on three separate occasions to level the score. Wayne Rooney put United ahead after just two minutes following some slack defending by Kolo Touré and Nigel de Jong but City equalized through Gareth Barry following a howler from Ben Foster.

The Red Devils went ahead again in the second half through Darren Fletcher who rose unmarked to head past the outstanding Shay Given in the City goal. But the Blues showed that they have the spirit to match the big names and equalized through Craig Bellamy who finally appears to be delivering on some of his early promise.

Fletcher appeared to have won the game for United with his second goal of the game but Bellamy was again on hand to pull the Citizens level. The Welsh striker robbed Rio Ferdinand on half way before sprinting into the opposition box and firing past the hapless Ben Foster. Notwithstanding their resilience City were finally undone by Owen's 96th minute strike.
