The UK has won the right to host the rugby league World Cup in 2013, to the delight of big-chested macho types across the North West of England.
It’s been 13 years since it was last held in the UK, and it was a financial catastrophe which led to the tournament not taking place for eight years. However, last year’s event in Australia, which attracted 19.2million TV viewers and a combined attendance of nearly 300,000.
‘It is a great boost for rugby league in the northern hemisphere to secure the World Cup in 2013,’ said Richard Lewis, deputy chairman of the RLIF.
‘I thought that the 2008 tournament was an outstanding success and our goal is to build on that success and to deliver a profitable tournament that further enhances the international prestige of rugby league.’
