On Thursday, olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius was found guilty of murderwhich could lead to him serving a minimum of 15 years in prison. The South African Supreme Court of Appeal gave the verdict with the sentencing yet to be decided. Pistorius was not present, but Ms. Steenkamp’s relatives were.
“As a result of the error of laws referred to and on a proper appraisal of the facts, he ought to have been convicted not of culpable homicide on that count but of murder,” Judge Eric Leach said.
Judge Thokozile Matilda Masipa of the High Court initially gave the verdict of manslaughter. She stated that the prosecutors failed to provide “strong circumstantial evidence” to support their case.
This ruling had sentenced him to 5 years in prison. He was released on parole on October 19 after serving less than a year. The rest of his time was to be served while under house arrest in his uncle's home. Prosecutors though have appealed against the inital ruling.
Pistorius had his legs amputated when he was 11 months old. He became to be a famous South African Olympian athlete who ran with carbon fibre prosthetic blades. This led to him being called the “blade runner”.
On Valentine’s Day in 2013 Pistorius shot 4 times into his bathroom claiming he thought there was an intruder there. He ended up murdering his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp.
