Olympic torch is lit

It was inevitable that protests would mark the lighting of the Olympic flame in Greece. Three French and a few Tibetans had their collars felt for trying to draw attention to human rights issues in China.

Some of the papers are saying that the Beijing games will be interrupted constantly by just such protests. Which leaves the Chinese authorities in a bit of a dilemma. If they stop people peacefully protesting, they’re infringing their rights. If they don’t, we’ll all learn a bit more about just how awful some of the Chinese authorities’ abuses of basic human rights actually are. Apparently. Allegedly.

Politics and sport should never mix, said some politician to a load of sports people once. Mmmm… in this case, we’re not so sure.
