Novak Djokovic wins US Open

Novak Djokovic won the US Open in the early hours of this morning, beating Rafael Nadal in a pulsating final at Flushing Meadows, and confirming his status as best player in the world.

The Serb beat Nadal 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1 in a match that lasted four hours and 10 minutes, and which saw the pair trade some remarkable baseline rallies that lasted minutes. Nadal had started well, breaking early to take a 2-0 lead, but Djokovic came firing back to dominate the first set, before the second and third sets turned into something akin to trench warfare. The windy conditions certainly helped it become a battle, and with serves being broken everywhere, the New York crowd were going wild.

Eventually though, fatigue and Djokovic's relentless play sapped all the energy out Nadal, and he cruised to a comfortable fourth set, beating Nadal for the sixth time this year and winning his third Grand Slam of the season.

'It's an incredible feeling,' said the 24-year-old. 'I've had an amazing year and it keeps going. Every time I play Rafa it's a big challenge. He's had a great tournament and I wish we have many more tough matches in the coming years.'
