Not going after all

Ah, the tumultuous winds of professional football: one day it’s on, the next it’s off; another day he’s kissing the badge the other he’s telling you to kiss his backside. No wonder we hacks find it so hard to keep up with the comings, goings, not-goings and not-comings – it’s just too damn unpredictable.

Yesterday we reported that Martin Jol looked like he was a cert for the manager’s position at Fulham, which was made available by the departure of Roy Hodgson for Liverpool. However, it now looks as though Jol is going to stay at Ajax, and it seems the bigger money offered by the Amsterdam giants swung his decision. However it’s not his wages that have been upped, but his transfer budget.

According to The Guardian, Jol had initially been told that he couldn’t buy anyone new until Luis Suarez and Holland right-back Gregory van der Wiel had been sold, but the club have now said that he can spend to bring in a winger and then reinforce once the pair have been sold. ‘They (Fulham) were interested but in principle I will stay at Ajax,’ Jol said to De Telegraaf. Sorry Fulham fans, your search for a new boss continues.
