Scolari named as new Chelsea manager11:11 Thu 12 June 2008 Chelsea have named Luiz Felipe Scolari as their new manager ending weeks of speculation over Avram Grant's successor. Scolari, who is currently at Euro 2008 with Portugal, has signed a four-year deal worth close to £27m. The Brazilian, who guided his country to World Cup victory in 2002, is set to start his new job at Chelsea on July 1 after his current contract with the Portuguese FA expires. The move may also see key defender Ricardo Carvalho remain at the club as well as the arrival of Bracelona midfielder Deco to Stamford Bridge. Roman Abramovich is reported to have been keen on installing a manager with authority who could instill discipline in the players and earn the club a sense of respect. Scolari ticks all of those boxes. The only doubt over the appointment is Big Phil's lack of experience at club level in Europe. He has been in international management since 2001 so it will be intriguing to see how he adapts to life in the Premier League. |
