Hleb set to leave Arsenal for Barcelona16:23 Thu 29 May 2008 Alexander Hleb's proposed move to Inter Milan looks off after Barcelona put in a better offer for the Arsenal midfielder. The Belarus international has stated that he wants to leave the Gunners because of their failure to win a trophy since the FA Cup in 2005. After previously claiming that he wanted to leave Arsenal because London was too noisy, at least Hleb has found a more concrete reason to do a Flamini and hightail it out of North London. The winger also played tribute to Arsene Wenger's positive influence on his career. But it's doubtful that Hleb's eulogy to the Frenchman will make up for that fact that he's looking to do a runner. Dutch striker Robin van Persie has publicly questioned Arsenal's strict wage policy which has already led to Flamini's exit from the Emirates Stadium. While the Gunners have started the rebuilding process with a move for the French midfielder Nasri, there is still concern over the future of Emmanuel Adebayor or Cesc Fábregas at the club. Wenger has also been able to recruit quality replacements for the big names that have moved on at Arsenal. But if the club starts haemorrhaging core players every season due to wage demands it could see Arsenal become nothing more than a feeder club that can't compete for silverware. |
