Manchester United beat Wigan to win the Premiership title11:00 Mon 12 May 2008 Manchester United came out tops on Super Duper Grand Slam Sunday, beating Wigan 2-0 at the JJB and handing Alex Ferguson his 10th league title at the club. Cristiano Ronaldo put United ahead from the penalty spot after 33 minutes before one of the team's elder statesmen, Ryan Giggs, wrapped up the points and the title on 80 minutes.
The game, however, was not without controversy. Wigan manager and United old boy Steve Bruce claimed that referee Steve Bennett had made some 'outrageous decisions' and United did ride their luck on a few occasions: Paul Scholes escaped a red card for a second bookable offence and Rio Ferdindand's seemed to block a goal bound Wigan shot with his arm. Chelsea drew 1-1 with Bolton at Stamford Bridge with Drogba missing a couple of sitters in the first half. Andrei Schevchenko put the Blues ahead in the second half only for Matthew Taylor to score a late equaliser for Bolton. Despite both scoring four goals and winning on the final day of the season Birmingham and Reading were relegated to the Championship. Danny Murphy's second half goal was enough to see Fulham beat Portsmouth and ensure the London club's Premiership survival for another year. Check out all the drama below.
