Newcastle United bid for Swansea left-back Neil Taylor

Newcastle United are readying for the imminent depature of their Spanish left-back Jose Enrique by tabling a £1m bid for the Swansea left-back Neil Taylor.

The 22-year-old Wales international was instrumental in the Welsh club's push for promotion last year into the Premier League.

It's probably fair to say that Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins is a bit miffed over the offer, which will disrupt the club's preparations for their first ever Premier League campaign.

He said: 'We have received a proposal from Newcastle regarding Neil. But the proposal has not been accepted or rejected at this stage.'

He continued: 'We have received a number of inquiries from different clubs for Neil's services and, like all bids we receive for any of our players, we will be talking it over with him when he returns from a break next week.

'Neil is a player we brought to the club this season from the Conference with Wrexham with a view to him progressing and developing with us over a number of years. The last thing on our mind was to sell anyone over the summer, he added.'

Taylor started his career as part of Manchester City's youth setup before moving on to Wrexham. After making over 80 appearances for his hometown club, he moved to Swansea on a three-year contract worth £150,000 plus 10% of any future transfer profit.
