Newcastle relegated to the Championship

Newcastle United were relegated to the second tier of English for the first time in 16 years after losing 1-0 to Aston Villa at Villa Park. Despite Hull losing 1-0 to Manchester United, Newcastle were unable to find an equalizer that would have ensured survival.

In the end the Magpies' terrible season finished on a whimper as they struggled to create chances and in the end Damien Duff's own goal was enough to condemn Newcastle to the Championship next season. The Irish winger, playing as an emergency left-back, diverted a Gareth Barry shot past Steve Harper in the Newcastle goal late in the first half.

The result will have serious financial implications for the North East club who will be desperate to offload high profile and big earning players during the summer to reduce their massive wage bill.

Despite picking up just eight points from their last 21 games, Hull City's brilliant start to the season was enough to see them remain in the top flight, but Middlesbrough will join Newcastle in the Championship next season after losing 2-1 to West Ham.
