Newcastle are on the verge of signing Argentinian playmaker Pablo Aimar according to reports in the English press today. The Magpies are said to have made a £7m offer to Real Zaragosa for the former River Plate player.
Aimar enjoyed a successful spell at Valencia between 2001-2006 before making a £12m move to Real Zaragosa in 2006. The 28 -year-old, once described as the new Maradona, has struggled to make an impression at Zaragosa and may be tempted by the chance to revive his career in the Premier League.
Aimar is reported to be be set to decide his future in the next 48 hours. His signature would be a major coup in a quiet summer at Newcastle and he would join his compatriot Jonas Gutierrez who moved to Tyneside from Real Mallorca last week.
