Newcastle let Given speak to Manchester City
Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given has been given permission to speak to Manchester City about a possible move to Eastlands. Although no fee has been agreed between the two clubs reports suggest that big spenders City have offered just £5m for the Republic of Ireland international.
Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear branded City's offer for the long serving goalkeeper as 'an insult', but it has since become clear that the player himself is keen to leave St James' Park. The 32-year-old was left out of Newcastle's 2-1 defeat to City earlier this week, which suggests that he may have played his last game for the Magpies.
Reserve keeper Steve Harper has also put pen to paper on a new three year deal with Newcastle as the club look ahead to life without their longest serving player. Former Bolton captain Kevin Nolan was unveiled as a Magpies player this morning following his £4m switch from Bolton. The sale of Given would give club owner Mike Ashley the chance to balance the books.
