Newcastle and Sunderland draw 1-1 in North East derby

Newcastle and Sunderland drew 1-1 in the North East derby at St James' Park. The game saw Magpies owner Mike Ashley return to the directors' box for the first time since August to a chorus of boos.

Sunderland took the lead when Djibril Cisse latched onto a long ball from Dean Whitehead to fire past Steve Harper in the Newcastle goal. The Black Cats almost went 2-0 up when Kieren Richardson's free-kick hit the post.

But Newcastle, who were poor throughout, were handed a lifeline when Steed Malbranque was adjudged to have fouled Steven Taylor in the box. Shola Ameobi stepped up to take the spot kick and earn the Magpies a vital point in their battle to avoid the drop.
