Nadal forced to pull out of Wimbledon

Reigning Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal will not be defending his title this year after being forced out of the tournament with tendinitis.

The world No 1 spoke to reporters about his disappointment: "Not to play Wimbledon is one of the toughest decisions in my career but the decision was made easier because I don't feel ready to compete at 100%. I don't feel like I'm ready to play in a tournament that is as important as Wimbledon."

Nadal made the decision after losing his second exhibition match in a row, 4-6 7-6 (8-6) 10-3, to No 19 seed Stanislav Wawrinka. "I tried everything," the Spaniard told reporters. "I tried hard in the last week to get in the best condition and today was my last test. I didn't feel terrible but I was not at my best."

The news will come as a big disappointment to tennis fans but it could give British No 1 Andy Murray, who is now No 2 seed, his best chance yet of victory at Wimbledon.
