New Manchester United boss David Moyes is having a torrid summer in the transfer market. Wayne Rooney is still angling for a move to Chelsea despite Moyes saying that the striker is not for sale. Meanwhile, as Moyes attempts to bolster United's fragile midfield, his main targets are proving elusive.

Moyes was determined to sign the Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, but it seems that the Spanish international will stay with the Catalan club for at least another season. Moyes, never the cheeriest of managers, would not have enjoyed Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger predicting that Fabregas would not move to United.

The manager then turned to his old club Everton and attempted to sign Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines. Everton said they were not for sale, although this may turn out to be Premier League speak for "Let's see a few more millions added on to that bid, then we can talk".

Now Moyes is targeting the Real Madrid star Luka Modric. Modric has already proved his Premier lLague credentials while at Tottenham, although he is a little less robust than the kind of midfielder United need. The problem Moyes may find is that United's desperation to spend some cash before the transfer deadline in September has become so well-publicised that clubs are hiking their asking prices.

Also in Moyes's sights is the Sevilla defensive midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia. The French player has a release clause of just 10 million euros. Moyes, accustomed to tight budgets at Everton, might find that more attractive than the £25 million Real will ask for Modric.

Meanwhile, Rooney is suffering from a mysterious injury, while feverish negotiations about the England star's future are being conducted behind the scenes.
