Milan confirm Beckham return

David Beckham has confirmed that he will return to AC Milan on loan in January with the aim of aim making it into Fabio Capello's World Cup squad next summer.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United player will spend five months in Serie A following the end of the current Major League Soccer season. It will be the second time that Beckham has joined up with Milan after spending a successful loan period at the club earlier this year.

Capello has repeatedly made it clear that the 34-year-old has to play in Europe during the MLS off season if he is to have any chance of making the cut for South Africa.

"I need to give myself the best chance possible to make the World Cup squad and playing for Milan on loan will help me to do that," Becks said. "I genuinely enjoyed my time at Milan and I look forward to meeting the players and staff again."

Beckham will join up with Milan after Christmas with the MLS play-off final taking place on 22 November. The England international underlined that he was still happy at the Galaxy and thanked them for allowing him to rejoin Milan.

"I'm committed to LA Galaxy and MLS in the long term and remain as passionate as ever about growing the game of soccer in America. I'm completely focused on ending this season on a high note with my club by winning the MLS Cup."
