Middlesbrough turn down Downing's transfer request
Middlesbrough have turned down a written transfer request from England winger Stewart Downing following an offer from Tottenham Hotspur. But Boro chief executive Keith Lamb told reporters that the 24-year-old left-footer is not for sale at any price.
Downing has long been the subject of the London club's affections and is said to have become disillusioned with Boro's lack of transfer activity and poor performances in the Premier League so far this season.
Gareth Southgate will now have to try and convince the academy graduate that he made the right decision last year when he put pen to paper on a new five year contract. But even Downing's father has told the press that his son should leave the Riverside if he wants to fulfil his potential.
