Mascherano could face FA charge

Javier Mascherano could be up in front of the FA on a violent conduct charge after hitting Jermaine Beckford on the back on the head with his elbow during Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Leeds in the Carling Cup.

Beckford appeared to pull the Argentine back at a throw in near the Leeds goal, and Mascherano swivelled with his arm raised and hit Beckford, who fell to the ground. Referee Alan Wiley didn’t reprimand Mascherano at the time, and if his report to the FA says that he didn’t see the incident the FA can slap a three-match ban on him.

‘I think it is just nothing,’ said Rafael Benitez after the game. ‘Mascherano's turned and put his arm up; it went a bit too high. I've looked at replays. I'm not saying it's malicious and I'm not saying it's not, you can't really tell. Some players have been sent off for that, some haven't, sometimes these things go your way, sometimes they don't.’
