Manchester United win the Community Shield
Manchester United beat Portsmouth in a lacklustre Community Shield at Wembley yesterday. With the teams locked at 0-0 the tie went to a penalty shoot-out which United won 3-1.
Portsmouth were honest and resolute throughout, but were no match for United. The new look Pompey strike force of Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe didn't have a chance to show their worth as their opponents completely dominated midfield.
Gary Neville played his first competitive game for United since March 2007 and was joined by fellow elder statesmen Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs in a strong first eleven. Carlos Tevez was the outstanding player on the day running tirelessly after every pass and battling for every inch throughout the 90 minutes.
