Manchester United hammer West Ham 4-0

Manchester United hammered West Ham 4-0 in the rain at Upton Park thanks to a brilliant performance from veteran midfielder Paul Scholes and his understudy Darron Gibson.

The result was even more remarkable considering the fact that United were missing the services of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Johnny Evans and John O'Shea. As a result Sir Alex Ferguson was forced to play Darren Fletcher at right back and Gary Neville in the middle alongside Wes Brown.

However, when Neville hobbled off injured after half an hour Michael Carrick was forced to play as an emergency centre back. Despite the makeshift nature of United's rearguard West Ham struggled to threaten Tomasz Kuszczak's goal.

Scholes opened the scoring on the stroke of half time with a trademark screamer just as it appeared that defensive injuries could threaten the outcome of the game. Gibson continued his midweek form against Spurs with a net ripper early in the second half to double United's lead.

The Hammers struggled to get to grips with United's movement and passing in midfield and were unable to find a foothold in the game. Antonio Valencia and Wayne Rooney added further gloss to the result with late goals but the loss of Wes Brown through injury has left Ferguson with a defensive headache ahead of Tuesday's Champions League tie with Wolfsburg.
