Manchester United hammer Blackburn 7-1

Manchester United hammered Blackburn Rovers 7-1 at Old Trafford yesterday afternoon to go top of the Premier League.

Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney started together up front for the first time in over a month and the Bulgarian silenced his critics with a five goal haul.

Blackburn’s season had been characterised by their defensive resilience and organisation, but Sam Allardyce’s team showed little resistance yesterday afternoon.

Berbatov put United ahead after 72 seconds when he collected a Nani pass and fired past a flatfooted Paul Robinson. Park Ji-sung made it 2-0 on 23 minutes capitalizing on hesitancy in the Blackburn backline.

The game was over as a contest just four minutes later when Pascal Chimbonda played a lazy backpass straight into the path of Berbatov and the striker finished mercilessly.

Things got even worse for Blackburn in the second half. Berbatov scored on 47 minutes before Nani got his name on the score sheet just one minute later. Chris Samba scored a late consolation for Rovers but by that point Berbatov had added two more goals to his tally.

The Bulgarian hadn’t scored in the league since his hat-trick against Liverpool back in September, but yesterday he became just the fourth player to score five goals in a single Premier League game which will do wonders for his brittle confidence.
