Manchester United suffered a major blow in their defence of the Champions League title after a 2-2 draw with Porto at Old Trafford last night. The Red Devils looked sluggish and suspect at the back for most of the 90 minutes and have it all to do next week.
Despite the performance, United looked to have secured a win ahead of next week's return leg, but an unmarked Mariano headed home a Lucho Gonzalez cross in the 89th minute to earn Porto a well earned draw and two vital away goals.
The Portuguese side had gone ahead as early as the fourth minute through Cristian Rodriquez, but a terrible back pass from Bruno Alves gifted Wayne Rooney the chance to equalize for United and he duly obliged.
Substitute Carlos Tevez thought he had won the game in the second half when he latched onto a sublime back heel from Rooney to blast the ball past Helton in the Porto goal. But Mariano's late strike has set United up for a do or die match next week as the wheels begin to fall off their quintuple bid.
