Manchester United beat Roma 1-0 in the Champions League

Manchester United and Sir Alex the Ferg will be brushing up on their Catalan and hoping that all those hours wiled away learning the Cyrillic alphabet will have paid off by May. The Red Devils predictably progressed to a Champions League semi-final showdown with Barcelona beating Roma 1-0 at Old Trafford thanks to a Carlos Tevez header.

Ferguson chose to rest Scholes, Rooney and Ronaldo ahead of Sunday's clash with Arsenal and the atmosphere at the game. The Scot's decision looked to be inspired as his dominated the first twenty minutes of the match. United should have been ahead with Hargreaves, Giggs and Anderson carving Roma open at will.

When the Italian side finally got the finger out and decided to attack they soon realised that they weren't up against the most solid back four on the planet. Wes Brown again proving beyond all doubt that he is anything but a world class right back. The United defender was adjudged to have fouled Mancini in the box handing Roma a golden opportunity to get back into the tie.

Up stepped Daniele De Rossi, scorer of a penalty in the 2006 World Cup final, but he did his best Chris Waddle at Italia 90 impression by blazing over the bar. Roma had a few other sniffs at goal but the penalty miss put the kibosh on any Lazarus style comeback.

While De Rossi is bound to be feeling gloomy this morning he can at least take some comfort in the fact that he's not the only famous player to have blazed a peno wildly over the bar in an important game. Enter misters Waddle, Staam, Beckham and Baggio.
