Manchester United beat Portsmouth 2-0

Manchester United moved three points clear of Liverpool in the race for the league title with a 2-0 win over Portsmouth at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick bagged the goals on the night in a match which saw United move closer to their third successive Premier League title.

Veteran midfielder Paul Scholes made his 600th appearance for the club and again underlined why he has been essential to United over the last decade with a trademark solid performance. However, Sir Alex Ferguson's side didn't have to break a sweat to pick up the three points against a disappointing Portsmouth side.

With Liverpool dropping two points at Anfield last night in the 4-4 draw against Arsenal, Manchester United knew that they had a chance to put one hand on the Premier League trophy. Ryan Giggs rolled back the years to create the opener for Rooney with a break down the left wing before Carrick made sure of the points with a low shot past David James eight minutes from time.
