Manchester United beat Everton to go five points clear
Manchester United beat Everton 1-0 at Old Trafford to ominously move five points clear at the top of the Premier League. Despite the win, United were a long way off their best against a dogged Everton side.
The game was looking finely poised when Mikel Arteta clipped Michael Carrick in the box late in the first half. Referee Mark Halsey pointed to the spot and Cristiano Ronaldo made no mistake from twelve yards out. Everton went close late on through Tim Cahill and Joleon Lescott, but Edwin Van der Sar has now gone a record 1,103 minutes without conceding a goal.
The result means that neither Chelsea or Liverpool can afford to slip up tomorrow if they are to challenge United for the title. The chasing pair meet at Anfield tomorrow afternoon.
