Manchester United beat Chelsea to win the Champions League

Manchester United are champions of Europe. Alex Ferguson's side beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after the two teams had played out a 1-1 draw in normal time in a tense and absorbing final.

United could half sown things up in the first half with Cristiano Ronaldo running rings around his marker Michael Essien. The Portuguese winger put United ahead with a well placed header half way through the first half and Tevez and Carrick should have increased the Red Devils' lead.

But Chelsea hit back at the end of the first half with Frank Lampard doing what he does best, making a late run into the box to knock a deflected shot past van der Sar. The Blues controlled most of the second half with Drogba hitting the post with a spectacular curling shot in the 78th minute.

The Ivory Coast international managed to get himself sent off in extra time for giving Vidic a slap in the face and both teams seemed to settle for the lottery of the penalty shoot-out. It was all square after substitute Belletti, with his first touch in the game and probably his last action in a Chelsea shirt, had sent van der Sar the wrong way.

Next up was Cristiano Ronaldo. He took one of the worst penalties seen in the history of the game which Cech easily saved. It all came down to Chelsea captain John Terry to take the last penalty and win the game and the Champions League for the London side. He slipped on the greasy surface and sent his shot wide. A seemingly disinterested Anelka had his limp effort saved by van der Sar in sudden death to see United win their third European Cup.
