Manchester United beat Birmingham 1-0

Manchester United showed that there is life without Cristiano Ronaldo with a 1-0 win over Birmingham yesterday afternoon at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney, restored to a central attacking role, came up with the all important goal in the first half.

But Birmingham, back in the Premier League after a year's absence, made life tough for United at times and went close to finding an equalizer through Gregory Vignal and Christian Benitez but goalkeeper Ben Foster was on hand to keep United ahead.

Michael Owen had the ball in the net for the home side in injury time but was flagged for offside.
