Manchester United beat Arsenal 1-0 last night in their Champions League semi-final first leg at Old Trafford. John O'Shea scored the all important goal but Sie Alex Ferguson will rue the fact that his team failed to take greater advantage of their dominance on the scoresheet.
Wayne Rooney went close to putting United ahead as early as the second minute but his looping header was saved brilliantly by Manuel Almunia. Arsene Wenger fielded Alexandre Song and Abou Diaby in midfield with the hope of protecting the Arsenal back four, but the pair failed to stem United’s relentless attacks.
Almunia was the Gunners star man pulling off a string of excellent saves to give his team some hope ahead of the return leg next week at the Emirates. The Spanish goalkeeper, however, could do nothing to keep out John O'Shea's close range effort on 17 minutes following some comical defending from a corner.
Arsenal failed to make an impression on the game as an attacking force and with Russian wizard Andrei Arshavin cup-tied after having played in the UEFA Cup with Zenit St Petersburg earlier this season Arsene Wenger's team has a mountain to climb next week.
